Popular Pizza

Easy homemade egg-free pizza crust and sauce that the whole family will enjoy.

Ingredients

  • 1 pkg yeast ~ corn-free
  • 3-4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/4 cups very hot water
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • Cornmeal to coat pizza pans ~ corn-free diets lightly grease pans and bake on silicone liners or parchment paper.
  • Some topping ideas:
  • Lean ground beef or turkey
  • Leftover chicken breast
  • Ham ~ deli or random leftovers
  • Pepperoni - I like to cut the pepperoni in half
  • Italian sausage cooked
  • Seasoned tofu ~leftover tofu bacon
  • Peppers - diced or sliced
  • Onions diced or sliced
  • Olives - sliced
  • Fresh mushrooms - sliced
  • Cheese - mozzarella ~ Daiya Cheese alternative or Follow Your Heart Mozzarella Shreds for Vegan pizza

Instructions

  • In a large mixing bowl, pour in hot water and sprinkle yeast over top. Let sit for a minute or two, then gently stir to combine.
  • Add in the salt and 2 cups of the flour. Mix well.
  • Add additional cups of flour as you continue to stir. As the dough becomes too thick to stir, dump it out and start kneading on a floured surface. Add more flour if the dough sticks to the surface.
  • Knead for about 5 minutes, adding flour as needed to prevent stickiness. The dough should be nice and smooth.
  • Place dough into a large mixing bowl sprayed lightly with a non-stick spray.
  • Cover with a dry dishtowel and let sit for one hour away from any draft.
  • Meanwhile, prepare all the ingredients you plan on using on your pizzas, and prepare the pizza sauce.
  • Pizza Sauce:
    1 -8 oz can of tomato sauce
    2 tsp oregano leaves
    1/4 tsp garlic powder
    1/8 tsp black pepper
    ~ Mix all ingredients together in a small dish and let sit until ready to use.
  • Preheat the Oven to 400.
  • When the dough has doubled in size, about an hour later, punch down and turn out onto a floured surface.
  • Divide in half and roll out one half at a time, flipping the dough over often to prevent sticking; add flour to the surface as needed. Roll out dough to the desired size, about 12" circle or square. It will seem thin but don't worry.
  • Place rolled-out dough onto a pizza pan or cookie sheet sprinkled heavily with cornmeal. The cornmeal prevents sticking and adds something extra to the pizza. For corn-free, bake pizza on parchment paper.
  • Place in oven to pre-cook for 3-5 minutes. If any bubbles form, pop them and gently push the dough down. Remove the baked crust from the oven and let sit for a couple of minutes to cool down.
  • Add the desired amount of sauce over the pre-cooked pizza crust, then cheese and remaining toppings. We like to end with a sprinkle of cheese over top to help hold the toppings in place. Bake for 12-15 minutes or until cheese is melted and toppings are thoroughly cooked.
  • Top a Vegan Pizza with a cheese substitute like Follow Your Heart Mozzarella Shreds or  Daiya Cheese Alternative. Peppers, mushrooms, and onions, for example. We also freeze left-over baked tofu and cut it into small pieces for a vegan pizza...it's awesome!
  • Remove the pizza from the oven and cut into slices and enjoy your amazing pizza!

Notes

Have fun making your pizza. We have had parties (adults and kids) where everyone gets a pre-cooked pizza crust and then adds the toppings they like. People can then share or eat their own. You can even make kid-size crusts by dividing the dough into fourths.
