Deep Dish Apple Crumble Pie

Why did I decide to make this Deep Dish Apple Crumble Pie? Because I can’t resist that sweet, crumbly topping on fruit crisps. Would you not agree that a pastry shell on the bottom and a crumbly top is the best of both worlds?

Every bite you take will have some flakey crust from the bottom and the sweet crumbly crust from the top, with lots of sweet baked apples in the middle.

Dare I say I like it better than a two-crust pie? It is especially perfect with apple, pear, or peach filling.

I made a traditional homemade pie crust, but any purchased pre-made unbaked shell or box mix is also ok. This recipe is egg, dairy, soy, corn, and nut-free, but you could also use a gluten-free crust or gluten-free box mix.

It’s best to heap the pie with apples because the filling will cook down during the baking process, and it would be downright sad not to have a big mouthful of apples in every bite.

This apple filling is the same recipe I use for my Country Style Apple Pie recipe, except I added about 2 extra cups of apples, ending in about 10-11 cups of apple pie filling.

Fruit crisps are near and dear to our hearts, and I have a favorite crumb crust I always use, so naturally, I used it here as well.

Here are a few options for allergy-free diets:

  • Nuts can be omitted from the crumb topping for nut-free diets.
  • Dairy-free butter substitutes can be swapped for butter if needed.
  • A purchased pie shell regular or gluten-free, is a time saver instead of making one.

Notes

**Please Note: Gluten-free flour doesn't hold together as well, but don't give up! Pat dough together inside pie plate if necessary it will still bake up deliciously!
