Why did I decide to make this Deep Dish Apple Crumble Pie? Because I can’t resist that sweet crumbly topping on fruit crisps. Would you not agree that a pastry shell on the bottom and a crumbly top is the best of both worlds?

Every bite you take will have some of the flakey crust from the bottom and the sweet crumbly crust from the top with lots of sweet baked apples in the middle.

Dare I say I like it better than a two-crust pie? I think it is especially perfect with apple, pear, or peach filling.

I made a traditional homemade pie crust but any purchased pre-made unbaked shell or box mix is also ok. This recipe is egg, dairy, soy, corn, and nut-free but you could use a gluten-free crust or gluten-free box mix as well.

It’s best to heap the pie with apples because the apple filling will cook down during the baking process and it would be downright sad to not have a big mouthful of apples in every bite.

This apple filling is the same recipe I use for my Country Style Apple Pie recipe, except I added about 2 extra cups of apples ending in about 10-11 cups of apple pie filling.

Fruit crisps are near and dear to our hearts and I have a favorite crumb crust I always use, so naturally, I used it here as well. Nuts can be omitted from the crumb topping for nut-free diets. And a dairy-free butter substitute can be swapped for the butter if needed.

  • 3-4 Tbsp cold water

  • Sprinkle crumb mixture over apples and cover as evenly as possible.
  • Bake pie at 375 for 30 minutes. Cover top of the pie with foil. Continue baking for another 30 minutes or until filling is bubbling. Uncover the pie for the last 10 minutes if desired.
  • Remove from the oven and let cool on a wire rack.

Notes

**Please Note: Gluten-free flour doesn't hold together as well, but don't give up! Pat dough together inside pie plate if necessary it will still bake up deliciously!
